Re the Aug. 10 article Charity accused of misusing funds: I received a solicitation from Help Hospitalized Veterans in the mail a few months ago. I checked with Charity Navigator on the computer as I do with all charities. That cursory check showed that the staff compensation was more than $2.5 million, and their fund-raising expenses were in excess of 27.5 percent. Charity Navigator gave them a one-star rating, the lowest.
Obviously I didn’t send them a contribution. The charity’s name is appealing, and without the ability to check I would have sent a contribution since I’m a Korean War combat veteran.
I urge everyone to check with Charity Navigator before sending money to any charity. If it isn’t listed there, that means information isn’t available for checking. Therefore, no contribution should be sent.
