During Tuesday nights special teams scrimmage, freshman Johnnie Durante had a 91-yard kickoff return. Lightning delayed the start of the scrimmage for more than an hour. The team returns to two-a-day practices Wednesday.
Smith handling long snapping
Tuesday afternoon, Mario Cristobal said that though long snapper Mitch McCluggage had recovered fully from his knee injury, Shae Smith had moved up to be the lead long snapper in training camp. Smiths also moved into the first team center spot this year.
No kicking changes expected
Neither kicker Jack Griffin nor punter Josh Brisk was expected to be pushed much to keep their jobs. Competition for both spots comes from freshmen: Kicker Sergio Sroka out of Belen and punter Chris Ayers out of Hollywood South Broward. So far, Srokas hit some short and mid-range field goals in drills. Griffin, meanwhile, has extended his field-goal range while improving his kickoff length and placement.
