Like much of the world I was glued to the TV coverage of the Olympic games. I was astonished the other day when I saw the women’s wrestling matches — they didn’t use any protective headgear.
As an ear, nose and throat doctor I have seen more than my share of cauliflower ears as a result of repeated trauma to unprotected ears from wrestling. The fact that the Olympic rules do not mandate that such headgear be used during contact sports, particularly wrestling, absolutely blew me away. Cauliflower-ear deformities from wrestling, for the most part, are preventable. How foolish and short-sighted
