Florida Gators’ scrimmage is first crucial step to choosing a starting QB

With Florida prepping for its first scrimmage of fall Saturday, coach Will Muschamp mapped out what he wants to see from his quarterbacks in their first live action of camp.

“Scoring points, moving our football team, taking care of the ball,” Muschamp said Friday. “Those will be key points.”

Muschamp has said since Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett are evenly matched in physical ability, the competition will come down to which sophomore has more command of the team. Offensive coaches have removed themselves from the field during practice, placing the responsibility for correct alignment and pre-snap motions on the players.

While Muschamp said both “have had their moments where they’ve really shined,” the Gators coach is not close to naming a starter.

“Going into Saturday, we’ll see how these guys manage this thing as we move forward. I don’t see a decision in the next week,” he said. “I think I want to get two more good scrimmages past Saturday, so we’ll get three good fall scrimmages to get out there live, get off the field and let them play. And we’ll go from there. And when the decision is right, when the time is right, we’ll know.”

UF loses two on D-line

Nick Alajajian, a senior defensive lineman, is out for the season after suffering a fractured right knee after a teammate rolled into him during a recent practice, Muschamp said Friday.

Alajajian, who also played offensive line for UF, appeared in 32 games, including 12 last year with one start coming during the team’s Gator Bowl win against Ohio State.

Redshirt junior defensive lineman Kedric Johnson dislocated his left knee in practice. Johnson is out “for a significant time,” Muschamp said.

Story restricted

Redshirt freshman receiver Ja’Juan Story, who informed the team of his decision to transfer Thursday, has restrictions on new schools to attend.

“He and I discussed that,” Muschamp said. “And that’s between he and I.”
