PALM SPRINGS -- An attempted home invasion in Palm Beach County ended with the death of a suspect overnight.
Palms Springs police said they responded to reports of a home invasion at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they were met with the resident of the home, who said two men entered his home “by force,” according to a release by Sgt. M. Vazquez, a police spokeswoman.
The resident shot and killed one of the men, Vazquez said. The second one fled and was later taken into custody by a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit near Kirk Road and Canal 8.
Ray Weiss — a neighbor and long-time home owner in the community — said Thursday morning that he wasn’t surprised the incident happened. He said that he’s seen a lot of people coming in and out of the home since the couple that lives there moved in.
The couple hasn’t lived in the townhome for long, said Weiss, who said that mostly renters live in the neighborhood because property values have decreased.
The neighborhood has “been quiet, but over the last few years it has been deteriorating,” Weiss said. “I don’t think we do the job we should screening tenants.”
After sharing how he and his wife are starting to get concerned on the status of the neighborhood, Weiss became visibly upset.
“It’s sad,” he said. “This is a real nice community.”
Palm Springs detectives are still investigating the case. None of the residents were injured during the incident, Vazquez said.
The department’s Crime Scene Unit spent most of the night processing the scene of the home invasion and cleared it around sunrise today.
