Tuesday’s first day in pads also was the first day freshman linebacker Patrick Jean took snaps with the first unit in team drills.
“We always liked him on film,” coach Mario Cristobal said. “We had him in camp for six or seven hours as a junior. He was just so darn coachable. Everything you would put into drill work, he carried over in to actual play in 7-on-7 and 1-on-1 drills. He’s a weight room fanatic. I cannot mention him without mentioning Leroy Owens. He’s got our attention early. We thought he would. Credit to the older guys like Winston Fraser and Jordan Hunt for tutoring those guys. But they naturally love the physical part of the game and they showed it today.”
This and that
Among the quarterbacks, backup Lorenzo Hammonds got some turns with the first team receivers in 7-on-7 and team drills. He completed an excellent throw 30 yards down the right the sideline to redshirt junior Jairus Williams, who clung to the ball despite being knotted up with sophomore cornerback Richard Leonard.
Wednesday, the middle of summer session finals week, will be a day off.
