Metrorail’s new Orange Line exposes a major hole in the county’s transit system. Now that Miami International Airport is connected to its transit system, you have to stop and ask: How many of those tourists are heading to Miami Beach? Fancy rainbow-colored glass and grandiose entryways are pleasing to look at, but if the system stops halfway to one of the world’s most famous travel destinations, it’s still a broken system.
Travel to the beach shouldn’t be restricted to bus or taxi. First, no one spending South Beach prices is going to set foot on any county bus. Second, the chokehold the taxi industry has on the Beach has gone on far too long.
It’s time for Metromover to introduce a Miami Beach loop. This would dramatically reduce drunken driving, help unclog the city’s narrow streets and, most important, connect its millions of tourists to the airport.
