DB Karate kicks into high gear at USA nationals

Sports Scene is a Miami Herald feature that spotlights news and notes from all youth sports activities in your neighborhood. The aim of the section is to feature game notes and the accomplishments of individual players, along with league and park standings.

Karate

Athletes from DB Karate School in Sunny Isles Beach won 24 medals during the USA Karate Nationals at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale.

DB Karate national medalists: Jordana Borges: Gold in kata (forms), Gold in team kata, Gold in kumite (sparring), Silver in okinanwan kata. Gabriela Corvalan: Gold in kata, Gold in kumite, Silver in okinawan kata. Mateus Borges: Gold in kumite, Gold in team kata, Bronze in kata, Bronze in okinawan kata. Anthony Ortiz: Gold in team kata, Silver in kata. Zarif Ramazanov: Gold in okinawan kata, Bronze in kata. Madison Paez: Gold in team kata, Bronze in kata. Sebastian Arenas: Gold in team kata, Bronze in kata. Elia Markman: Gold in kata. Hanna Markman: Gold in team kata. Maria Cerdan: Silver in kumite, Bronze in kata. Leandro Santos: Silver in okinawan kata, Bronze in kata. Martina Lujan: Bronze in kata, Bronze in kumite. Tommy Epstein: Bronze in kumite. Richie Epstein: fifth place kata. Mishell Shamis: fifth place kata. Ilona Letushko: participated.

Focused and committed to their karate careers, they are not only becoming elite athletes but also learning the values of karate like discipline, respect, honor, self control and self-defense. They are hopeful to someday represent their country at the Pan American Games and World Championships as well as the Olympics in 2020.

DB Karate School is at 17070 Collins Ave., Suite 258, in Sunny Isles Beach.

Football

Booker T. Washington High School, representing the Miami Dolphins, defeated the team representing the Detroit Lions 20-17 to win the 7-on-7 High School National Football Tournament in Indianapolis.

Booker T. Washington becomes the fourth consecutive team that represented the Miami Dolphins to win nationals.

“It was an awesome run by Booker T.,” said Twan Russell, the Dolphins Director of Youth and Community Programs. “The road to the championship had many amazing teams and a lot of close games. Booker T. went undefeated by winning all 12 games over the best talent in the United States. Booker T. showed character and continued to battle through each game. Congratulations to Coach (Tim) Harris and Booker T. Washington on winning the 7-on-7 High School National Tournament. All of us from the Miami Dolphins and South Florida are very proud of you.”

Booker T. Washington (12-0) went undefeated throughout the tournament, averaging 42.8 points per game and holding the opposition to 20.5 ppg. They outscored their opponents 514-246.

After going 5-0 in the first day of the tournament, Booker T. faced Washington and Dallas in round robin play.

The Booker T. defeated Washington 56-14. The first three plays by Booker T. resulted in two touchdowns. After Booker T. racked up six interceptions and eight touchdowns the game was out of reach.

Booker T. knocked off Dallas 52-38 to earn the top seed in the AFC Playoffs. The game came down to the wire as Dallas gave Booker T. the biggest test of the weekend. Three interceptions helped Booker T. defeat Dallas.

Booker T. began the AFC Playoffs against divisional rival, the New York Jets. Booker T. dominated from the opening drive and never looked back. Booker T. defeated New York 48-14.

In the quarterfinals, Booker T. faced another divisional rival, the New England Patriots. Booker T. tied the game with 18 seconds left before halftime at 28. Booker T. intercepted the ball with 10 seconds remaining to seal the win,31-28.
