A cyclist hit by a vehicle on the Rickenbacker Causeway on Tuesday remains in critical condition.

The rider was struck near the Rusty Pelican restaurant by a black BMW. Police said the cyclist suffered a head injury and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.

The name of the victim has not been released, but police confirmed the rider is male. Miami Police spokeswoman Officer Kenia Reyes said a unit from traffic homicide came to investigate the situation and are still trying to determine who is at fault in the accident. Police said it was not a hit-and-run.

Tuesday’s crash marked the most recent accident involving an automobile and bicycle on the Rickenbacker Causeway. Two years ago, Christophe LeCanne was run over and killed on Bear Cut bridge. In February, Aaron Cohen, 36, died after driver Michele Traverso slammed into Cohen and a fellow cyclist on the Powell Bridge. Since then, “vibratory ridges” have been installed along the Key Biscayne-bound side of the road to deter drivers from swerving into the bike lane.

A traffic safety campaign, Safe Streets Miami, sprung to life after Cohen’s death. Suggestions on the campaign’s website include more pedestrian crosswalks and bike lanes, and road designs that have “lower speed limits, narrower traffic lanes, and traffic-calming measures such as traffic circles and flashing crosswalks.”
