2 judges draw opposition; 5 vie for 2 open seats in Broward

 

Ten candidates are running for four Broward County Court seats, including two races in which incumbents have drawn opposition.

Roshawn Banks

Robert F. “Bob” Diaz

 Age: 59

Family: Married, one daughter

Education: Bachelor’s degree, Florida International University, 1981; law degree, Nova Southeastern University, 1984

Occupation: Judge since 1992

Randy Goodis

 Age: 44

Family: Single, no children

Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, Boston University, 1990; law degree, University of Miami, 1993

Occupation: Attorney (criminal defense), private practice, former prosecutor

Melanie Golden

 Age: 33

Family: Single, no children

Education: Bachelor’s degree in sociology, University of Florida, 2000; law degree, UF, 2004

Occupation: Former public defender now in private, civil practice

Terri-Ann Miller

 Age: 57

Occupation: Broward County judge since 2007. Miami-Dade County judge from 1993-2001

Richard Adam Sachs

Ilene Lieberman

 Age: 65

Education: Bachelor’s degree in political science and education, State University of New York at Cortland, 1968; law degree, Nova Southeastern University, 1989

Occupation: Broward County commissioner

Political career: Former Broward County mayor and commission chairwoman, former city commissioner and mayor of Lauderhill.

Kathleen ‘Katie’ McHugh

 Age: 44

Family: Single, no children

Education: Bachelor’s degree in criminology, Florida State University, 1990; law degree, Nova Southeastern University, 1994

Occupation: Attorney (criminal and civil), private practice

Political career: None


Sun Sentinel

Incumbent judges don’t often face competition when they seek reelection, but it’s been known to happen.

In the Aug. 14 primary, two Broward County judges are facing challenges. One, Robert F. “Bob” Diaz of Group 10, has been on the bench since 1992 and is facing two challengers, attorneys Roshawn Banks and Randy Goodis.
