A 33-year-old U.S. Navy sailor from Tamarac who stepped on a mine after he rushed to protect his canine partner during a firefight in Afghanistan has died from his injuries, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael J. Brodsky, 33, was severely wounded earlier this month by a blast from an improvised explosive device in Kandahar Province that took off both his legs.

“He died a true hero,” said his grandfather, Stanley Brodsky, of Pembroke Pines.
