Re America Medina’s July 14 letter,
Wal-Mart welcome in Midtown: The long-time residents of Wynwood, those who have been living in the neighborhood for more than a half-century, have survived this long without a Wal-Mart.
Thanks to the Midtown Miami development the neighborhood has had a renaissance, bringing renewed attention to the area, which previously was occupied by abandoned lots and warehouses.
These now have become restaurants, cafés, galleries and shops, raising property values.
Medina says that a Wal-Mart would deliver new jobs.
However, the jobs it would create would be low-level positions. One criticism of Wal-Mart is that its lower prices draw customers away from other smaller businesses, hurting the community. A Wal-Mart in Midtown would not be in keeping with the feel of the neighborhood.
