South Miami Hospital, a suburban community facility, was ranked the No. 1 hospital in South Florida in a survey released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report — a study that generally favors large academic medical centers.

Last year, the combined entity of “University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital” was ranked No. 1 among 74 hospitals in the area. UM/Jackson fell to No. 2 this year. Cleveland Clinic in Weston was ranked third, while Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami — ranked tops for eye care in the nation — was listed fourth on the general region list. Baptist in Kendall and Memorial West in Pembroke Pines tied for fifth.

“This is a huge, huge win for us,” said Thinh Tran, chief quality officer at Baptist Health South Florida, the system that owns South Miami.

Tran acknowledged that the magazine’s report traditionally has listed academic centers at the top when measuring quality of care, patient safety and physicians’ views of a hospital’s reputation in the community.

South Miami ranked No. 42 in the country in geriatrics and No. 47 in orthopedics, the U.S. News website reported. It also was listed as “high-performing” in nine other specialties.

The UM/Jackson entity had eight high-performing adult specialties and eight nationally ranked pediatric programs. It was the ninth year in a row that Bascom Palmer has been tops in the nation for eye care.

Last year, Jackson heavily promoted its No. 1 ranking. On Tuesday, spokesman Edwin O’Dell said. “Jackson continues to strive for excellence to meet the medical needs of our community, and we’re still ranked among the best hospitals in South Florida.”

The others in the top 10 were Mount Sinai, at No. 7, Doctors at No. 8, Holy Cross at No. 9 and Homestead, No. 10. The full list is available at health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area/miami-fort-lauderdale-fl
