Miami philanthropist and author Lin Arison has been named the winner of a prestigious national arts award for her work in arts education.

Americans for the Arts will present the 2012 National Arts Awards to Arison and fellow honorees in New York on Oct. 15. The awards were announced Monday.

With her late husband Ted Arison, founder of Carnival Cruise Lines, Lin Arison started the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts in 1981. Later in the 1980s, they founded the New World Symphony, an orchestral academy, with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.

A resident of Miami and Israel, she is working on her fourth book. Arison also holds the title of executive producer for an HBO miniseries and Oscar-winning documentary short film.

Also honored by the organization are Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen; artist James Rosenquist; Tony Award-nominated actor Brian Stokes Mitchell and singer Josh Groban.
