Junior lifeguards show off skills on Fort Lauderdale beach

 

The second Florida State Junior Lifeguard Championships brought together more than 200 youths representing about a dozen teams on Sunday.

No emergency rescues were required on Fort Lauderdale beach Sunday, but plenty of help was available just in case as about 250 boys and girls competed in the second Florida State Junior Lifeguard Championships.

Under a blistering sun, competitors from about a dozen teams raced around buoys on paddleboards, sprinted down the sand and took part in run, swim and surf relays to show off the skills necessary to save the life of a struggling ocean swimmer.
