A 6-year-old boy was in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital Saturday night after being shot in the leg early in the day in an Opa-locka apartment, Police Chief Antionio Sanchez said.
The owner of the weapon falsely told the child it was a BB gun, Sanchez said. The boy picked it up but dropped it because it was heavy, he said, and the gun discharged, wounding him.
It is unknown whether the man lived in the apartment with the boy and his mother, Sanchez said. The shooting remains under investigation, he said, with no decision yet whether to charge the gun owner.
