This may not come as much of a shock to Hollywood watchers, but People magazine is reporting that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce.

The power couple was married almost six years.

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” Holmes’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe told the magazine. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.” Suri is 6.

The Rock of Ages star, 49, wed the former Dawson’s Creek star, 33, in an Italian castle in November 2006.

Cruise popped the question in June 2005 at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The actress was on a press tour with him while he was doing promo for War of the Worlds.

They had been first linked in April and in May, he famously jumped on Oprah’s couch over his happiness about his new relationship.

This was Holmes’ first marriage (she was engaged to Chris Klein) and the third for Cruise, who previously was married to Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children, and Mimi Rogers.

Cruise’s spokeswoman released a statement to The Los Angeles Times: “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”

It’s going to be a lonely birthday. The Mission: Impossible star turns 50 on Tuesday.

For years the rumor mill has churned out stories that the marriage was not authentic and that Holmes had signed a “contract” with the superstar to get ahead in her career. How long it was to last is not known. Five years with one child? Ten years with two? Hard to say because no one has ever seen a copy of this thing, if it even exists.

Then again you can’t believe everything you hear. For a while there, the tabs were reporting that Suri was an alien from outer space (Scientology-land) and that Katie was lugging around a pillow as a baby bump.

Cruise acknowledged to Playboy that stories written about him used to be a bother (oh, you remember the one about him being gay, right?).

“Does refuting things help? Not really,’’ Cruise told the magazine. “There comes a point when you just have to go, ‘You know what? Here’s how I’ve lived my life: I’ve never been late to a set. I make films I believe in. I feel privileged to be able to do what I love.’ You just have to keep going and remember that. The other stuff? I hear it, I read it, I get it. But life is not a matter of trying to prove anything to anybody.”
