Obama energy strides

State Sen. Anitere Flores’ June 20 letter, Green energy initiatives aren’t working, was long on vague accusations and short on giving any substantive evidence to back up what she’s saying.

She was right in insisting that President Obama should be accountable for his actions.

So, here are a few concrete examples of what Obama has accomplished:

He has made an agreement with the auto industry to require cars to get 54 1/2 miles to the gallon by 2025, almost two times the standard before he took office.

His administration approved the first offshore wind farm to produce clean electric energy for some 200,000 homes. He is committed to opening public lands for investments in clean energy.

He also has committed his administration to approving projects by the end of 2012 that will increase renewable generation capacity to power three million homes and is working to increase American oil production and clean coal technology.

So, when it comes to being accountable, the president’s administration can certainly boast successes even while recognizing and tackling the very real energy challenges ahead.

Juneteenth — a celebration of freedom

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with the news that the war had ended and freed all remaining slaves. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation — which had become official on Jan. 1, 1863.

  • Bees not news

Re the June 16 story Miami couple saddened after bee hive destroyed: It must have been a slow news day for the Miami Herald. This article took up two-thirds of a page in the newspaper’s local section.

  • Bees could be saved

An experienced bee keeper could have moved the beehive to a less troublesome location; perhaps on the couple’s property where they could continue to enjoy the bees and the bees could continue to do their good work.
