Broward

Suspected robber identified by his cell phone photos

Some time ago, Javante Wilcher held blue cotton candy and posed in front of his cell phone.

He probably didn’t expect Broward detectives to find those photos. Nor did he plan for his next photo to be a mug shot.

Wilcher, 20, was arrested Tuesday after Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives say he mugged a man and dropped his cell phone at the scene. The phone had several photos of Wilcher, including a few close-up pictures of his face.

Detectives say Wilcher came up behind a man, put him in a chokehold and put a boxcutter to his neck around the 2500 block of NW Eighth St. on the night of May 30. He demanded money from the man and ran away.

The man chased him, and the two brawled. During the fight, Wilcher cut his hands, so the man backed up. Wilcher got away and was later identified by a Crime Stoppers tip.

He is booked in Broward County Jail and faces a charge of armed robbery.
