Broward Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in finding a hit-and-run driver who killed a 17-year-old in Oakland Park last week.

Authorities said Gabriel Amaya was riding his bike through a crosswalk at the intersection of Prospect Road and Powerline Road Thursday morning when a vehicle slammed into his front tire, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Amaya was thrown from his bike.

The driver started to hit the gas but then stopped and got out of the vehicle. After a few seconds, the driver got back in the car and drove away. Amaya was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives are looking for a light-colored GMC or Chevrolet SUV or pickup truck between the years of 1995 to 1999. The vehicle will have serious damage to the left, front headlight, grill and side mirror. Investigators believe the vehicle is likely light blue and was probably an after-market paint job.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact BSO Traffic Homicide Detective John Grimes at 954-321-4845 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or www.browardcrimestoppers.org.
