As a 2010 graduate of MAST Academy, I’m shocked at the Miami-Dade County School Board’s approval of the proposal to expand MAST without further thought and planning.
A school isn’t just a building; it’s the teachers, parents and students, and they all need to be a part of the planning process. The compromise made was a good start, but this expansion requires a lot more consideration.
Placing portable classrooms as soon as this August on a campus that’s already operating at 130-percent capacity will hurt both current and new students by further overcrowding the facilities.
If we really want what’s best for all students, whether from Key Biscayne or currently at MAST, then this process needs to slow down. The School Board should table the proposal and give it the thought that it deserves.
