Re the June 9 article Rally fights health insurance mandate: What could be more hypocritical than the placards that read, “Stand up for religious freedom?” The Catholic Church has always been an autocratic institution that rarely has stood for religious freedom.
In many predominantly Catholic countries the church has exercised its political clout to have governments prohibit divorce and contraception. Historically, it sought to have Catholicism made the state religion, not to mention forced conversions, the Inquisition and burning heretics at the stake.
The church uses religious freedom when it is convenient, like in this case of healthcare.
