Broken AC brings halt to Brewer trial

A broken air conditioner in the Broward County Criminal Courthouse brought a premature end to Friday’s testimony in the Michael Brewer case.

Matthew “Zeke’’ Bent is in trial, charged with attempted second-degree murder. In October 2009, Brewer was covered in rubbing alcohol and set on fire following a dispute with several teens. He jumped into a Deerfield Beach apartment complex pool to save his own life. Bent is accused of being the ringleader in the fiery attack.

Circuit Court Judge Michael A. Robinson told attorneys about 1:45 p.m. that the unpleasant conditions in the courtroom made it impossible to proceed for the day. “It is not bearable,’’ Robinson said. “It is not something that civilized society should put a jury through.

The air conditioning had been out since 7:30 a.m. and building services had hoped to have it repaired by 1:30 but that didn’t happen.

The defense had been scheduled to call one witness.

The trial will resume 9 a.m. Monday.
