Turnpike tolls increase by 25 cents in South Florida

Get ready to pay some more on the roads. Tolls are now higher on Florida’s Turnpike and the Sawgrass Expressway.

The increase, which went into effect Sunday, generally will be 25 cents for travel within South Florida. Drivers who pay cash will pay $1.25 instead of $1 and those who have SunPass will pay $1 instead of 75 cents.

On longer trips, the increase will be larger. For example, tolls along Alligator Alley will increase from $2.50 to $ 3 cash and $ 2 to $ 2.75 with SunPass.

The increase, announced in September 2011, stems from a law passed five years ago that allows the Florida Department of Transportation to link tolls on highways it controls to increases in the consumer price index.

Tolls on the express lanes of Interstate 95 or on Miami-Dade Expressway Authority highways will not be affected.
