A Davie teen died Thursday after a last-day-of-school drive to the Everglades ended in a fatal crash.
Nathan Northrup, 18, was riding with three friends toward Macks Fish Camp in Southwest Broward about 2:20 p.m. when the driver lost control of the truck, the Broward Sheriffs Office said.
The 2001 Toyota Tacoma was headed down a dirt road off Krome Avenue at about 45 mph when it swerved to the left, then to the right. The truck flew off the road and rolled, landing upside-down in a canal.
The driver and two of the passengers got out of the truck safely, but Northrup was trapped. Witnesses helped flip the truck right-side-up and got Northrup out of the vehicle.
He was flown in critical condition to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he died at 3:42 p.m., BSO said.
Ricardo Vera, 17, was taken to Memorial Hospital Miramar with minor injuries. Alex Hanas, 18, and driver Vincent Terracciano, 18, of Davie escaped injury, BSO said.
The BSO Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating. Officials said drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.
