Barry University basketball player Chad Renfro was bit by a shark after he ventured into the waters in Jacksonville to surf Wednesday.
Renfro, who will be a senior for the Buccaneers in the fall, was paddling out to catch a wave in south Jacksonville Beach when he felt a bite on his left foot.
After hurrying to the shore and calling out for help while bleeding profusely, Renfro was taken to the hospital. He required stitches -- 85, according to his mother -- to close his wounds. His mom said the shark bite sliced a nerve, the majority of a tendon and a portion of a bone.
Renfro is healing, and plans to return to the waters once he is healed. He also plans to finish his basketball career.
A 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard, Renfro averaged 11.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He is the leading returning scorer for the Bucs. He shot 34.9 percent from three-point range, canning 52 triples, which ranked second on the team last season.
