The People’s Rights Amendment, introduced in response to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, will make it clear that our constitutional rights such as free speech, are for people, not corporations. Corporations are claiming these same rights to exempt themselves from laws they don’t like such as those banning corporate spending on our elections. They also claim constitutional rights to exempt themselves from food ingredient labeling laws and from requiring health warnings on cigarette packs.
Corporations themselves don’t have constitutional rights; only people do. Americans, including 68 percent of Republicans, 82 percent of independents and 87 percent of Democrats support a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Citizens United decision and make clear that corporations don’t have the same rights as people.
