Royal Caribbean will get another new ship in the spring of 2015.
Royal Caribbean Cruises announced Wednesday that it had exercised its option to build a second 4,100-passenger ship in the Sunshine class for 697 million euros, or about $937.8 million at current exchange rates.
Last February, the Miami-based cruise operator said it had signed a letter of intent with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany to build a new ship with an option for a second.
The first will be delivered in fall 2014. It will be the first new ship for Royal Caribbean International since the 5,400-passenger Allure of the Seas, twin to the world’s largest ship, debuted in late 2010.
“This confirms our continued confidence in the success of this new generation of ships and our strong conviction about the Royal Caribbean International brand,” said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, in a statement. Royal Caribbean is the world’s second-largest cruise ship company.
Robin Farley, a cruise analyst for UBS Investment Research, said Royal Caribbean’s is the only announced ship delivery so far for the North American market in 2015.
Norwegian Cruise Line has two ships on order for delivery in April 2013 and April 2014. Carnival Cruise Lines will launch Carnival Breeze this June, and Princess Cruises, a unit of Carnival Corp., is expecting new ships in spring of 2013 and 2014. Several other ships are on order for Carnival’s European brands.
