Tomic moves on in Delray Beach

The Sports Network

Eighth-seeded Australian Bernard Tomic was a first-round winner at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.

Tomic defeated former world No. 2 Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour, 11 minutes on the hardcourts at Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center. Haas had titled here back in 2006.

American Ryan Sweeting swept past compatriot Donald Young 6-1, 6-1, while additional Day-1 wins came for Israeli Dudi Sela and Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin.

This week's top seed is 6-foot-9 American John Isner, while struggling former world No. 1 American Andy Roddick is seeded fourth.

Argentine Juan Martin del Potro beat Serb Janko Tipsarevic in last year's Delray Beach finale. Both men, however, are playing in Dubai this week.

The 2012 Delray Beach winner will collect $75,780.
