Four Miami-Dade teens lost in the Everglades found, flown to safety

Four teens lost overnight while canoeing in the Florida Everglades were found safe Thursday morning and flown out of the national park, Miami-Dade police said.

At 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to a report of two teenagers missing in the Everglades after setting out on a canoe trip on Wednesday afternoon.

The department’s Air Rescue South was dispatched to search for the young couple in a lake northeast of the Flamingo campgrounds within Everglades National Park, police said in a news release.

Air Rescue South flew in the middle of the night through dense fog for more than an hour before finding the teens.

After discovering the missing canoe, flight medics discovered two other teens in the canoe.

Two young females who were initially unaccounted for had been invited on the trip.

All four canoers were hoisted into the helicopter and flown to safety without any injuries.

The teens were discovered after the mother of one of them called 911 to report her son and his girlfriend failed to return their canoe to the rental shop. The parents had found their son’s car at Everglades National Park.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue used the incident to remind boaters of the importance of having a boating safety plan, which includes notifying family and friends of departure and return times along with locations.

“Fortunately for these young canoers, a parent was aware of their initial point of departure,” the department said.
