TEAM OF THE WEEK

South Dade wrestling finished second in the 3A state meet, marking the ninth time in the past 10 years that the Bucs finished in the top two.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Yoanse Mejia, Southwest, wrestling: Mejia won a state title in the 145-pound weight class with a dominant 19-3 technical fall victory against St. Thomas Aquinas’ Kris Iglesias. It was the Eagles’ first title since 2005.

William Ford, South Dade, wrestling: Ford secured the 220-pound division state championship in Class 3A to give the team runner-up Bucs an individual champion.

Esteban Gomez-Rivera, Belen, wrestling: Gomez-Rivera won his second state title with a victory at 126 pounds in Class 2A against Jensen Beach’s Jared Browning. Gomez-Rivera beat Browning for the second time in three meetings at the state finals for his career.

Jesus Rodriguez, Columbus, boys’ basketball: Rodriguez scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Explorers to a 77-69 double-overtime victory against Coral Reef in a Region 4-8A quarterfinal.

Wes Alcegaire, Archbishop Curley, boys’ basketball: Alcegaire led the Knights with 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 57-47 win against Westminster Christian in a Region 4-3A quarterfinal.

Ieshia Small, Krop, girls’ basketball: Small had 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lightning to a 62-55 win against Lourdes and a berth in the state final four for the second consecutive season.

Nia Roberts, Norland, girls’ basketball: Roberts had 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals to lead the Vikings back to the state final four after a 64-41 win against Fort Myers.

Andrew Fuente, Killian, baseball: Fuente struck out 10 in six innings and gave up three hits to lead the Cougars to a 1-0 win against Florida Christian.

Meg Parker, Palmetto, softball: Parker had 10 strikeouts and went 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Panthers to a 5-3 win against Southwest.

Joshua Rosner, Hillel, boys’ tennis: Rosner won his match 8-0 to lead the Hurricanes 7-0 over Dade Christian.

Sara Monteagudo, Killian, girls’ tennis: Monteagudo won both her singles matches to keep the Cougars with wins against Southridge and Sunset.

Giselle Mesa had a one-hitter with four strikeouts and four RBI to lead Varela to 10-0 victory over South Dade.

Christy Martinez hit three out of three for two runs and two singles.

Late Tuesday — Patriot Invitational: Florida Christian won the girls’ team crown at the Florida Christian Invitational at Tropical Park in Miami. The Patriots swept the three relays, while Northwest Christian’s Monica Sapp and Monique Harvey each won two events.
