Highlight Adalberto Jordan’s success

Re Dana Milbank’s Feb. 20 Other Views column, Does the GOP care about Latino voters?: Judge Adalberto Jose Jordan is an exceptionally qualified and brilliant jurist who enjoys admiration from both sides of the courtroom. His inevitable elevation to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals should be celebrated and not diminished by politics.

His confirmation by the U.S. Senate was one of the quickest in recent history.

But The Miami Herald, unfortunately, gave readers a piece about the skullduggery of presidential politics instead of Jordan’s accomplishments, which transcend the political football that the media emphasize.

Perhaps some day the media shall choose to concentrate on ability, character and hard work as the criteria most worthy of publication.

Politics, after all, will always have center stage.

Additionally, the reference to the so-called “Latino voter” diminishes the accomplishments of Jordan — and so many others like him — who have been rewarded, not for their ethnicity or color but, rather, because of their hard work, discipline, impeccable character and exceptional judicial temperament.

    Major advancements needed in Haiti

Re Jacqueline Charles’ May 14 article, Wreath , new government mark Martelly’s first year at helm in Haiti: While the piece provides an accurate overview of contemporary Haitian governance, it doesn’t mention a few key insights regarding the implications of these events.

  • Higher taxes

All those Democrats who can’t wait for the Bush tax cuts to expire so they can soak the rich are in for a big, unpleasant surprise.

  • Vulnerable are harmed

The U.S. House recently voted to increase poverty. Programs that provide a hand up not a handout and have a proven record of poverty reduction were cut. HR 5652 will deny millions access to healthcare by restricting Medicaid and the new healthcare law, and by denying millions of children the Child Tax Credit. The House bill would totally eliminate a program that protects both children and older people from abuse and neglect.
