Stroking paranoia

The term “McCarthyism” was coined to describe the bullying tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy who, for too long, was allowed by a cowardly media to take advantage of the rampant paranoia of the 1950s. Today we are seeing something similar with the rise of Sen. Rick Santorum. Based on his recent utterances, it is easy to imagine him asking: “Are you now or have you ever been in favor of abortion, amniocentesis or birth control?” and shunning those who answer Yes.

Our Founding Fathers wisely put the First Amendment in our Constitution. A president’s duties are many and diverse, but being a national religious leader in charge of what we should believe is not, and should never be, one of them.

    Major advancements needed in Haiti

Re Jacqueline Charles’ May 14 article, Wreath , new government mark Martelly’s first year at helm in Haiti: While the piece provides an accurate overview of contemporary Haitian governance, it doesn’t mention a few key insights regarding the implications of these events.

  • Higher taxes

All those Democrats who can’t wait for the Bush tax cuts to expire so they can soak the rich are in for a big, unpleasant surprise.

  • Vulnerable are harmed

The U.S. House recently voted to increase poverty. Programs that provide a hand up not a handout and have a proven record of poverty reduction were cut. HR 5652 will deny millions access to healthcare by restricting Medicaid and the new healthcare law, and by denying millions of children the Child Tax Credit. The House bill would totally eliminate a program that protects both children and older people from abuse and neglect.
