Pianist’s spontaneity and vision make for captivating recital

Pianist Stephen Hough’s concert for the Friends of Chamber Music of Miami was that rare event when a true artist shares something deeper than a performance – a personal vision of what the music conveys – and the audience leaves with a new appreciation of the repertoire. UM’s Gusman Concert Hall was only half full Sunday evening, but the crowd was enthralled by Hough’s technical virtuosity and keen musicality. Trim, handsome and lanky, he captivated from the moment he began playing with an immediacy that never let up. Haitian dance troupe Ayikodans provide intense, thrilling performance

Physically ripped and emotionally expansive, the Haitian dance troupe Ayikodans returned to Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center on Friday evening. The swell of emotion that surrounded the troupe’s performance there a year ago, as community leaders gathered to support a company on the verge of collapse after the Haitian earthquake, has leveled off somewhat. Katherine Michelle Tanner plays the daughter, Kenneth Kay her dad, and the cast also features Cliff Burgess and Sarah Grace Wilson. William Hayes directs the production at Palm Beach Dramaworks, 201 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. Photojournalist's show at Freedom Tower features 1960s photos of anti-Castro exiles

Embedded: A Photojournalist Captures Conflict and Resistance, a show drawn from 800 images photojournalist Jim Nickless, of Broward County, shot of CIA-funded Cuban rebels training to overthrow Fidel Castro, will be on view May 24-Aug. 11 at Miami Dade College’s Freedom Tower Gallery.
