Five people were treated for smoke inhalation Sunday night, including one who was taken to the hospital, following a condominium fire.
According to Tom Gallagher, spokesman for the Pembroke Pines Fire Department, the fire broke out about 10 p.m. in the kitchen of Unit 217 of the Arbor Building of the Park Place Condominium community along the 1400 block of St. Charles Place.
Because of the fire, all eight floors of the building were temporarily evacuated. Emergency responders and others provided assistance to more than 100 residents as they left the building, some of them in wheelchairs.
The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished, Gallagher said. Damage was contained to the affected unit's kitchen area.
The one person who was taken to Memorial West Hospital was believed to be suffering from non-live threatening injuries.
The displaced resident of Unit 217 was being assisted by the American Red Cross. All other residents were allowed to return to their units.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
