Barry Gibb is flying solo. The legendary cofounder of the Bee Gees is taking the stage Tuesday night at the Hard Rock Live. Instead of his brothers, he’ll have his oldest son Steven there for backup. “I’ve been sort of hungry to perform publicly for a long time,’’ said Gibb, 65, who has had a home in South Florida for more than 30 years. We talked to him about the show, daily life as a local and what kind of music he likes now.

Can you give a hint as to what you’ll be doing up there?

There will be a couple of surprises. I don’t want to give too many away but surely some special moments. My son Steven is part of the band so it’s more a family affair than you might expect. The music genes seem to have come through. I think he’d probably prefer to be in a heavy metal band than with me, but he’s great. Loud but great.

How are you preparing for this solo concert?

Lots of sleep is key. I get to sleep no problem but get up around 3 or 4 and walk around or watch the news. I have a lot to think about. I want to do well, and I’m really conscientious of what all the people expect of me. I sleep a little later than most. I get my payback that way. And you have to work at your [voice]. When my falsetto came about it was like a discovery of a new set of muscles I had in my throat.

How does it feel to be a local?

I love it here; we feel like natives now. We lived here back when there was really only the elderly pensioners on South Beach. It was wonderful. What a totally different environment it was. I remember when there was no traffic on Collins Avenue. But when you look around the world, you think, ‘It’s pretty nice in Miami.’ I love to drive all over the place. I’m still a sightseer after all the years.

Do you get recognized around town? It must be strange to hear your music playing all the time.

It’s a mixed bag. Sometimes you go somewhere, and people get excited to see one of the Bee Gees or whatever. Saturday Night Fever and all that was just a great journey, how we all worked as a team. Wanting something to be wonderful and not stopping until it was. That’s the way it is. I accept that reality. Other times I can go to a Blockbuster, where I’ve been going for 15 years, and they’ll ask me for my ID! But it’s still a pleasant surprise to hear the music at a store or on the radio. I love hearing Emotion and I think Destiny’s Child did a great job re-recording it.

What do you think of today’s musicians?

I watched some of the Grammys. I hope it all continues for Adele. She’s a pleasure to listen to. Amy Winehouse was also a pleasure. It’s a shame she had such a short life. I love the Foo Fighters. They remind me of a younger Rolling Stones. There is so much energy and vitality in what they’re doing. It’s coming from the gut; it’s not programmed music.

Did you ever meet Whitney Houston?

I had never met her, but it’s a great loss for all of us. She had a wonderful voice and a wild personality. Great talent is great talent. Once you find the passion I think that creates the talent, not the other way around.

How is your brother Robin’s health?

To tell the truth I don’t really know; he hasn’t been that forthcoming about his illness. I think I’d be the same. At this point in life, we all have our health problems. I can’t imagine going through this. I did go over [to London] to see him, and he wasn’t well at all, but I haven’t heard from him in about two months. I wish I knew. I wish him all the well and love in the world. He’s my only brother now.
