Gutierrez leads Hialeah baseball to win

TEAM OF THE WEEK

South Dade’s wrestling team secured the Region 4-3A championship with a dominant performance Saturday night at Reagan. The Bucs had six champions — Patricio Lugo (106 pounds), Maleek Williams (113), Isaiah Varona (120), Justin Ramirez (126), Jason Alfau (138) and Daniel Saintil (170) — and advanced 11 wrestlers to state.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Cedric Hankerson, Coral Reef, boys’ basketball: Hankerson had 31 points, including the game-winning free throw with 5.6 seconds left as the Barracudas beat Killian 55-54 for the District 16-8A title.

Antravious Simmons, South Miami, boys’ basketball: Simmons had 28 points to lead the Cobras to a 66-47 win against Columbus and the District 15-8A title.

Beatrice Mompremier, Miami High, girls’ basketball: Mompremier had 14 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks to lead the Stings to a 58-41 win against American.

Lindsey Bernhardt, Ransom Everglades, girls’ basketball: Bernhardt led the Raiders to a 50-36 victory over Key West that clinched their first trip to the regional semifinals with 33 points, four assists, four steals and eight rebounds.

Keith Simmons, Dieuminse Dore and Demond Richardson, Homestead, wrestling: Dore (113 pounds), Simmons (182) and Richardson (195) all won regional titles to help Homestead finish second at the Region 4-2A meet in Stuart Martin County.

Ramon Moreno, Pace, wrestling: Moreno won an individual 106-pound regional title to help the Spartans finish second at the Region 4-1A meet at Cardinal Gibbons in Fort Lauderdale.

Francisco Aguirre, American, boys’ soccer: Aguirre scored the tying goal and his effort led to an opposing own goal that helped the Patriots rally for a 3-2 win against Fort Pierce Central and a berth in the Class 4A state semifinals.

Joey Alamo, Westminster Christian, boys’ soccer: Alamo had a goal and two assists to lead the Warriors to a 4-1 win against Weston Sagemont that led them to the Class 1A state semifinals.

Sarah Medina, Palmer Trinity, girls’ soccer: Medina scored the lone goal for the Falcons in the state final loss to St. Johns Country Day, capping a playoff run that helped them reach the state finals for the first time.

Adam Gutierrez had 10 strikeouts and allowed only one hit in five innings to give Hialeah (2-0) the advantage it needed to overcome Coral Park 3-2 on Wednesday.

Cody Fulton had the game winning run, hitting went 2 for 4 with an RBI for Hialeah. Nestor Cortes drove in the other two runs for Hialeah, going 2 for 3 with two doubles.
