Firefighter accused of putting poison into colleague’s canteen

A Titusvillle firefighter is accused of putting a poisonous degreaser chemical into a colleague’s canteen.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, an investigation began last week when Titusville Fire Department Lt. Phil Jones noticed an odd-smelling liquid in his canteen. The canteen was inside a gear bag used when fire crews battle brush fires.

Police believe the canteen was filled with Gunk, an aerosol cleaner-degreaser, harmful to health or fatal if swallowed, according to the report. Randy Moore was arrested Tuesday.

Moore, a firefighter and paramedic, confessed to putting the degreaser in his colleague’s canteen. Moore told police he did not intend or hope to kill Jones but was “upset over other issues and it went too far.”

It wasn’t the first prank in a series of attempts against Jones, according to police. Police did not say what specific issues spurred Moore to commit his alleged actions against Jones.

Police are investigating a second firefighter that was a witness to the canteen incident, according to Moore. An internal investigation has also begun.
