Re the Feb. 3 article, Teacher Gets Called to the Principal’s Office: North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre was seriously out of bounds when he called the principal at David Lawrence K-8 to complain about one of his teachers, Laurie Futterman, because she had the audacity to bring her children to a city council meeting and encourage them to speak on a proposed city contract.
As a government and history teacher at Dr. Michael Krop Sr. High School, I find the mayor’s behavior appalling. I would be delighted if any of my students attended and spoke out at a city council meeting; they would deserve extra credit, and I’m pretty sure I would get a pat on the back from my principal. This type of civic engagement is what teachers try to foster in our students. I have known Laurie Futterman for many years as an incredibly dedicated teacher (and mother) and I commend her for encouraging her children and students to be active, informed citizens.
