Southwest Ranches officials plan to close Southwest 199th Avenue at Stirling Road on June 10 to protect town residents from unwanted traffic funneling through from Pembroke Pines.

The town plans to close Southwest 202nd and 205th avenues one or two months later, Town Administrator Kenneth Fields said last week during a Town Council meeting.

The same three roads have been barricaded before — more than six years ago.

But in December 2005, Southwest Ranches agreed to remove barricades blocking access to Southwest 199th, 202nd and 205th Avenues after signing a deal with neighboring Pembroke Pines.

Pembroke Pines commissioners agreed to terminate that agreement on Dec. 21. The next day, Southwest Ranches council members approved the road closures.

Town officials said closing the roads would reduce the heavy traffic on the north-south streets that connect Stirling and Griffin roads.

By canceling the agreement, Pembroke Pines also got out of a promise not to fight a controversial immigrant detention center proposed for Southwest Ranches.

Pembroke Pines commissioners have agreed to spend $25,000 on outside counsel to research how the city might block the detention center.
