A committee of Miami-Dade commissioners signed off Monday on a rubber-tire trolley system for the city of Miami that will include a route to the new Little Havana Marlins ballpark.
The regional transportation committee, which had held up the plan using a procedural move last month, unanimously agreed to bring the proposal to the next meeting of the full county commission for final approval.
The $20 million trolley system, which at least for the first year will operate without charging riders a fee, will run through the Brickell, Overtown and downtown areas and west to the hospital district, culminating at the new ballpark.
Two residents at the committee meeting raised concerns that the trolley will draw riders away from the county’s bus, Metrorail and Metromover routes. But commissioners said they think there will be little duplication of services.
“Hopefully it will work, and it will have a lot of success,” said Commissioner Bruno Barreiro, the item’s sponsor.
