The ladies of G5ive strip club wont be strutting their stuff till 6 a.m. after all.
The club owner failed to convince a majority of North Miami Beach councilmembers to extend the clubs hours in a meeting that featured several tied votes, and even an appeal from a local reverend.
This isnt about what type of facility he is running, said the Rev. Gary Johnson, who addressed the commission and said he speaking on behalf of friend and club owner Antonio Bryant, who took over the establishment in June 2011. Its about having fairness, just like any other place in North Miami Beach to do business.
The club is currently open from 2 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Saturday, thanks to a 90-day trial period that expires at the end of March. Normally, the club closes at 2 a.m.
Commissioners opposed to letting the club stay open until 6 a.m. said they were concerned about a spate of violent incidences at the club, located at 337 NW 170th St.
The North Miami Beach Police Department responded to 11 calls at or near the club since August, including a Nov. 6 shooting that left two wounded.
It was an argument that occurred in the club, the patrons left the club property, got in their vehicles and as they were leaving they drove around the corner and began shooting at each other, said North Miami Police Department Chief Larry Gomer.
Gomer told the council he wasnt against extending the clubs hours. But he recommended doubling, if not tripling, the number of required off-duty officers. The city currently requires the club to foot the bill for two off-duty officers every night.
Councilwoman Marlen Martell said the November incident was enough to prompt a no vote.
If it wasnt for that shooting I would definitely be approving it at this time, she said.
With Councilman Frantz Pierre absent, the council tied on allowing the extended hours, meaning the application failed .
Mayor George Vallejo, Vice Mayor Beth Spiegel and Councilman Philippe Derose voted in favor of the club extending its hours.
Derose noted the council has allowed other businesses to extend their hours from 4 to 6 a.m.
I wanted to be consistent, he said.
Spiegel also voted to table the item until another meeting, saying she wanted review addition crime statistics.
City Manager Lyndon Bonner will decide if the 4 a.m. closing time will stay in effect after the trial period ends in March.
Johnson said the club has spent more than $76,400 on off-duty law enforcement since June and always has several bouncers present.
If we had 30 officers you just couldnt stop what happens away from the premises, Johnson said, adding the earlier closing time has meant less revenue for club, which he says has had to lay off employees.
If a shooting takes place in North Miami Beach, thats not our issue.
