Inspired South Broward reaches girls’ basketball semifinals

Miami Herald writer

South Broward co-head coach Sharlene Ferguson’s father passed away this week, but when she showed up for Thursday night’s Region 4-7A quarterfinal at Boyd Anderson, her presence was inspiring and her Bulldogs dominated Boyd Anderson 69-46.

The game was never in doubt as the Bulldogs led 30-10 midway through the second quarter. Once South Broward pushed its lead to 20, the Cobras never got closer than 49-36 less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

“Coach Ferguson’s father passed away earlier this week so the kids really wanted to win for her,” co-head coach Richard Walker said. “It’s been a tough week and when she came to the game [Thursday] that really inspired them.”

The Bulldogs led by as many as 25 in the fourth quarter. However, the short handed Bulldogs could be even shorter when they play in the regional semifinals Tuesday. They entered Thursday’s game with only six healthy players as center Taylor Mack missed the game with an injury. In the second quarter, Tamia Harris went down with an injury and never returned. The status for both players is in question for Tuesday.

If neither is available, the Bulldogs will have only five healthy players. They battled foul trouble when Briyana Lloyd and Kenidi Robinson both picked up three quick fouls and Robinson had four fouls before the half.

Cedricka Sweeting led the Bulldogs with 14 points and four assists and Lloyd had 15 points.

Taravella (16-8) fell behind 13-0 by the end of the first quarter and didn’t collect its first point until 7:11 left in the second on Renee Pantophlet’s free throw.
