Who is campaigning for whom?

In South Miami’s Valentine’s Day elections, the answer isn’t so clear.

City Commission candidates at a forum on Monday resorted to name calling while accusing opponents of forming alliances to campaign together, referred to as running on slates. None of the candidates would admit to forming any kind of slate.

But campaign literature and finance reports would suggest otherwise.

The groups seem to be split with mayoral candidate Julio Robaina, Group 2 commission candidate Josh Liebman and Group 3 candidate Armando Oliveros running together. On the other side: Philip Stoddard, running to keep his spot as mayor, Group 2 candidate Sally Philips and Group 3 candidate Bob Welsh.

Consider:

• Welsh, better known as “Bicycle Bob,” has been busy doing what he’s well-known for: Pedaling around the small city and handing out flyers, often critical of Robaina and his perceived slate-mates. And he has handed out literature in support of Philips and Stoddard.

• Philips and Stoddard contributed to each others’ campaigns.

• Oliveros and Robaina are using the same campaign consultant, according to finance reports.

• Oliveros previously told the Miami Herald he endorses Robaina and Liebman. “Robaina and Liebman are on the same page,” Oliveros said.

Only Group 3 candidate Gabriel Edmonds has managed to avoid getting lumped into any group. At Monday’s forum, Edmond said the only person he campaigns with is his young son, whom he pushes in a stroller as he goes door-to-door.

“I won’t be beholden to anybody else,” Edmond said. “I don’t really believe in slates because for me, its almost like you have a group of people coming with an agenda.”

The finger-pointing escalated at Monday’s forum when, in opening remarks, Liebman accused his opponent of being part of an alliance.

“The only slate here is the slate created by Phil and Bob and Sally. There is no other slate,” Liebman said.

Welsh later countered that Liebman supposedly tried to put signs in a residents’ yard in support of Robaina and Oliveros.

“You’re on a team,” said Welsh.

Liebman later denied the allegation, saying: “We’re looking at a bully and a liar and a hypocrite.”
