Reyes’ winning RBI lifts Varela over Coral Gables in softball

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

The Hialeah Gardens boys’ basketball team won its first GMAC championship with a convincing victory over Norland. Ramon Rodriguez, Gian Clavel, Adrian Gonzalez and Alvaro Simoza each scored in double figures. The Gladiators had at least four players score in double figures in each game of the tournament.

The Dade Christian cheerleading team had the best performance by any Miami-Dade County team at the state meet, finishing second in the Class 1A Small Varsity Division.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Sam Singer, Ransom, boys’ basketball: Singer had 26 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists and six steals to lead the Raiders over St. Brendan.

Cleon Roberts, Norland, boys’ basketball: Roberts had 33 points, including four three-pointers, in the GMAC championship game.

Tiffany Suarez, Lourdes, girls’ basketball: Suarez scored 48 points and had 18 assists in two games to lead the Bobcats to wins over Ferguson and South Miami and to help the team win the District 15-8A title.

Alexis Richards, Palmetto, girls’ basketball: Richards had 23 points and 24 rebounds to lead the Panthers to the District 16-8A title over Varela.

Amanda Sicre, Florida Christian, girls’ basketball: Sicre had 23 points to lead the Patriots to a win over Marathon and their first district title in 10 years.

William Ford and Blair Faust, South Dade, wrestling: Ford and Faust each won their first district championships to lead the Bucs to the District 16-3A title.

Keiondre Wedderburn, North Miami Beach, wrestling: Wedderburn scored a pin in 1:50 to win his 170-pound division and lead the Chargers to the District 14-3A title.

Stefano LaRosa, Gulliver, boys’ soccer: LaRosa scored three goals to help the Raiders defeat Ransom Everglades 3-2 in a thrilling Region 4-2A semifinal.

Tyler Ursuy, Westminster Christian, boys’ soccer: Ursuy scored three goals to rally the Warriors to a 3-2 win over Miami Country Day in the regional quarterfinals, and then scored the game-winner in a 3-1 semifinal win over Palmer Trinity.

Bailey Evans, Palmer Trinity, girls’ soccer: Evans made 17 saves to keep the Falcons in it until they beat Melbourne Central Catholic on penalty kicks to clinch their first berth in the state finals.

Jasmine Reyes had the game-winning RBI to lead the Varela Vipers to a 6-5 victory over Coral Gables in the first softball game of the season Monday night.

Varela fell behind 4-2 in the first inning of the game but rallied to tie the score at 6. The Vipers scored three runs in the seventh inning to win the game.
