Gabrielle Union talks about her favorite Miami hot spots

If you peeked at Gabrielle Union’s calendar for the next few months, it would be pretty full. The actress, who splits her time between L.A. and Miami, has a handful of projects in 2012, among them Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds and Steve Harvey’s Think Like A Man, plus she’s hosting the BET honors awards Feb. 13. It’s a wonder she gets any time to spend with boyfriend Dwyane Wade. We spoke to the actress, 39, who is also the February cover girl for Ocean Drive, which is throwing a party in her honor Monday night at the Delano. We found out quite a few things about the Nebraska native — namely that she’s a big bookworm.

You have a lot going on. Can you talk about your news?

I’m pretty busy right now. We have Good Deeds coming out Feb. 24. The buzz sounds really good, and I’m just excited to be back on the big screen. I found out that this indie that I shot last year during the NBA Finals — which was traumatic for me [laughs] — called In Our Nature got into South by Southwest film festival. I’m happy I didn’t miss Game 6 of the finals for nothing! They pushed the release of Think Like A Man to April 20 to give us more money for marketing, which is usually rare.

What is your character like in “Good Deeds?’’ What was it like working with Tyler Perry?

I play his seemingly perfect fiancée in his life that’s sort of mapped out by his parents, and we’re both at a crossroads in our lives where we start asking ourselves, ‘Do I live for my parents and other people or do I live for my own passions and wants and needs?’ We both have to make big decisions about how we move forward.

Do you get back to Nebraska often?

Well, my mom retired back there and became an adopted mom to three little kids — two girls and a boy, all under 5. We all get back there quite a bit to enjoy our new little sisters and brother. But yeah, I love Nebraska, I love Cornhusker football. You can’t keep me away!

You look sexy in a gold glitter dress on the OD cover. What was the shoot like?

It’s funny because [photographer] Steve Erle and I had never met, but we have a ton of mutual friends and it was, from walking through the door, a blast. He encouraged me to be a little bit more out there. Some of the stuff that we shot that’s not in the magazine, he’s sending me prints just for myself — those are some of the coolest shots I’ve ever taken in my career. I’ve had quite a few photo shoots but none like this. I’ve never felt so empowered when I left and free. Usually I just sort of feel like a doll that’s kind of being posed. Steve got a side of me that is rarely captured in print.

What are some of your favorite places to visit when you’re in Miami?

Well, me and D, we rarely get to have a day off together, but when we do we love to go to the spa at One Bal Harbour. It’s awesome. We’ve been going for a couple years and it never, never ceases to amaze me how relaxed and rejuvenated we feel when we leave. Shopping, it’s The Webster, Intermix in Miami Beach and En Avance in the Design District. My girl Karen works there, and I can always, after I feed my face at Morgans, go across the street and find something over there.

Any other places to grab a bite?

I haven’t figured out the food truck schedule in Miami. A group of people like to ‘pregame.’ We always hit up Michael’s Genuine, City Hall. If I’m not driving, I like to have wine and sit outside at Quattro on Lincoln Road. Or if it’s super casual, I like to go to Burger & Beer Joint.

What else do you do in your free time?

I love to hang out at the beach, just to sit out there. I love to do beach walks to kind of decompress with the girls and burn calories at the same time. I love to just sort of people watch. The Design District is one of my favorite places to walk around and look at the furniture stores.

What is something fans may not know about you?

I’m addicted to Twizzlers. I go into CVS just to buy large packs. And I don’t know if people really understand how much I love books. Even though I got a Kindle for Christmas, I love the smell of books; I love turning the page; I love dog-earing things and highlighting the passages. I love fiction and kind of losing myself. So everywhere from Aventura to Key Biscayne you will find me in bookstores sitting cross-legged on the ground.
