South Dade captures 11th district wrestling title

Miami Herald Writer

South Dade won its 11th district title in style Saturday, racking up 280.5 points to capture the District 16-3A crown at Sunset.

The Buccaneers advanced all 14 of their wrestlers to the championship round for the first time in recent history. South Dade also had a handful of wrestlers capture their first individual district championships.

The top four finishers from each weight class advance to the regional meet, which will be held next Friday and Saturday at Ronald Reagan. Behind South Dade’s 14 qualifiers were Palmetto and Ferguson, each with nine, and Killian with six.

South Dade dominated the competition in the team standings. Finishing behind the Bucs was Palmetto with 145 and Ferguson with 76.5 points.

Buccaneers seniors Blair Faust (152 pounds) and William Ford (220 pounds) both earned their first district titles — extra special for Ford as he finished as the district runner-up the past two seasons. Christian Hill dominated the 195-pound division, earning his title with just 43 seconds logged on the mat.

South Dade won 11 of the individual district titles, with Southridge’s Khadeem Stanton winning the 145-pound crown and Palmetto’s Joseph Roy winning the 160-pound division and Cornell Gilmore winning the heavyweight title.

Buccaneers coach Victor Balmaceda said his team is peaking at the right time.

“We’re looking like we’re really coming together right now, at the right time,” Balmaceda said. “That’s always the fear as coach — that your team will peak too soon or too late — but I think our tough schedule is paying off for us and we’re really peaking at the right time in the season.”
