In view of recent healthcare legislation and its impact on religious liberty I think often of James Madison.
The protection of conscience from the intrusion of the state was paramount when the First Amendment was crafted. He wisely noted that conscience is the property of the individual — not of the State. By what reasoning does President Obama and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius presume to dismiss such wisdom without consequence? Any individual who does not respect freedom of religion has little or no respect for liberty itself.
