Blanche Ely features so many weapons that opponents find themselves putting out a different fire each night.
On Saturday senior guard Krishaun Myers played arsonist with a game-high 27 points to help Ely (23-2, ESPN FAB 50 No. 18) stave off a late rally and beat Dillard 79-75 in the BCAA Big 8 championship game at Ely.
Myers, an All-Tournament selection, served notice early it was going to be his night with a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter and then sealed the victory with nine points, including a crucial three-pointer that pushed the lead to 73-60, in the fourth quarter.
“We came out saying we wanted to be the Big 8 champions,’’ Myers said. “Everybody was on the same page. We feel so good because our coach Melvin Randall has never had a team ranked so high. We are just trying to get to that one title, and that is a state championship.”
After scoring a game-high 29 points against St. Thomas Aquinas in the semifinals, Ely’s 6-6 star forward Clide Geffrard, the Tournament MVP, deferred to Myers and finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Anterio Smith added 11 points, and Kahlil Thomas had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Ely jumped on Dillard (17-4, No. 2 in 5A) with five three-pointers in the first quarter, then displayed how explosive it can be with an 8-0 blitz at the end of the second quarter that turned a 34-26 lead into a commanding 42-26 halftime advantage.
But Dillard’s rising 6-4 swingman Romelo Walker came alive for 13 of his team-high 25 points in the third quarter to keep the Panthers within striking distance and then fueled an 11-3 run in the fourth quarter that saw Dillard pull to 76-71 with 55.2 seconds left.
During the spurt, Walker converted a three-point play, then found Tyson Grace for a layup before his three-point attempt fell in with 1:12 left to cut the lead to 76-69.
“We wanted to see Ely again,’’ Walker said. “We got the chance but didn’t take advantage. It would have been a big win for us. Defensively, Ely applies pressure really, really well. They deserve to be ranked No. 18 in the nation.’’
Terrence Smith had 16 points, and Staphon Blair added 14 for the Panthers.
