Finite Earth

 

Re the Jan 23 Other Views article Stopping the clock: Juliette Kayyem writes eloquently about stopping the doomsday clock before it reaches 12 o’clock. it now stands at 11:55 and the many threats to the survival of our planet, both man-made and natural.

One cause for concern that she didn’t mention is our unsustainable population growth.

After we began measuring time in years it took us 1,800 years to reach one billion people. More than 200 years later, we have seven billion people. Every person needs food, water and shelter. Every one of us should realize our Earth isn’t expanding and its resources are finite.

    Re the May 22 letter The goal: more water conservation: You cannot tell existing homeowners to limit water-sprinkler use while building more homes, each having showers, dishwashers, sprinklers, etc.
